Faux Lashes

Here's a quick & easy tip for applying faux lashes:

Use individual lashes for more control & better application.  Use tweezers to grab the lash and apply a small amount of glue to the end.  Add the lashes to the base of the lash line starting on the outside working in.  3 or 4 on each end will do the trick!

Curl your lashes first- 3 seconds per eye
Add lash primer (white mascara)
Add mascara
Apply faux individuals
Add a final touch of mascara

Stand back & smile because you look fabulous!

New found love for Toner!

Thayers Alcohol-Free Cucumber Witch Hazel with Organic Aloe Vera Formula Toner is my new favorite beauty product!  I've staying away from toners because of their drying effect and I simply didn't like the way my skin looked or felt after.  I came across Thayers at my local GNC & was surprised by the ingredients.  Ingredients I already love to use on my face were in there: Aloe & Cucumber.  Alcohol-free, sounds good..  Lately, I haven't been able to get my skin as "clean" as I had been before.  My skin could be changing, the weather, maybe I'm wearing more makeup- not really sure.  But I've been looking for a little something extra to get a "deep clean".  And I'm glad I found it!   My skin is looking &  feeling better.  The cost was $9.99 at GNC but it seems you can pick this up online for a little cheaper.

I love the Alcohol-Free Cucumber Witch Hazel with Organic Aloe Vera Formula Toner cooling essence has a deliciously calming effect on the skin. I will be trying the Rose Water as well!

• Fragrance-Free • Paraben-Free • Naturally Preserved • Hypoallergenic. Also steer clear of toners that list the following as ingredients: SD alcohol (will be followed by a number), ethanol and isopropyl alcohol.

Less is more...

Over the weekend, the topic of cleavage came up.  How old is too old to show off "the girls"?  When should you cover up?  As my friend Tiffony & I say, "You're showing all of your Cleveland and a little bit of Detroit!"  Now, I am all about showing off what you've got & feeling sexy.. but here are a few options for showing off your breast assets in a classy way regardless of age!
  • Off-the-shoulder. I'm a huge fan of off-the-shoulder looks at this age because it's a way to dress sexy without really showing anything. And all women have sexy shoulders.
  • Draped necklaces. Not only are they chic, they are a way to create a long, vertical line that draws attention to the bodice without the obvious bareness of exposed cleavage.
  • Layered looks. You can give the illusion of cleavage by opting for a peek of a lace camisole under a shirt or jacket; you can also layer a tank or T-shirt in a lighter color (white or nude) under a sweater or top that has a deep V neck to suggest cleavage without showing anything

Yes to Cucumbers!

I decided to try these wipes after hearing great things about cucumbers. Cucumber’s nutritional benefits include natural salts, enzymes, and vitamins essential for strong cell growth and repair. In addition, the high mineral content and minerals in cucumber peel offer a natural source for a fresh, powerful antioxidant.

Now these aren't the answer for daily cleansing, but they do a good job of getting makeup off, and for an after-work lipstick change or cleaning yourself up after the gym, they're perfect. And if you have price or ingredient concerns, they're also cheap ($3 at most drug stores), paraben-free, not tested on animals, and the packaging is certified sustainable.

Trent Alert: Purple Lips

Purple lips are a huge trend right now. It is not an easy feat to rock a bold lip like this without looking like a goth queen. I'm going to give you a few tips on pulling it off perfectly!

  • Pick the right shade for you.
Go darker vs. pale and try to keep the color as rich as possible.  The color is not one size fits all.  Glossy or matte will work depending on the fullness of your lip.  Smaller lips go w/ a gloss and full lips can go either way.  Here are a few shades that are hot right now available at Sephora.com:

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Shades 14-16
Underworld by Illumasqua
MAC in Violetta
If these purples are too intense for you, try something sheer like Anna Sui's Limited-Edition Mini Rouge in Purple
  • Use a bold eye liner
Deep black liner stands up to the boldness of an intense lip color, so don't be afraid to apply a thick winged liner in the blackest black.  Liquid or creme with a thin brush works the best.
  • Easy on the eye shadow
Remember the rule of balance: Bold eye, lighter lip.  Bold lip, lighter eye.  Use more of a shimmer on your lids.  A soft gold or silver will compliment the strong lip color.  Less is definitely more!  Take the lead from trendsetters like Rhianna!

Recipes for Yogurt Masks

Yogurt is a highly effective treatment for the common skin condition rosacea. It has the ability to soften the skin while calming the redness. Simply apply it as a mask, and leave on for about 15 minutes. Rinse, and apply a light layer of olive oil. Here a couple other yogurt masks to try:

Ingredients:

* 1 cup cold natural yogurt (Stonyfield Greek Organic is best)
* ½ cup oatmeal (any type of basic oatmeal works here)

Preparation:
Mix the ingredients together.
Apply to the skin for 10-15 minutes.
Wash off mask with a washcloth steamed in the microwave (careful that it's not too hot).

Other fun options for oatmeal face masks:
Add egg whites to the recipe above.  Mix the oatmeal and an egg white. Let the mixture dry on face, then gently wash off with a few splashes of warm water.  Follow with a steaming washcloth to the face.

Healing Honey

Who knew that honey is equally effective for treating colds and improving your looks? Applying honey all over your face is beneficial, since it contains vitamins and moisturizes.  It's also a natural antibiotic that can kill bacteria just like fresh Aloe.  Honey is also very healing when dealing with acne.  Add a little white sugar and exfoliate with it in the shower, too.  See our last blog entry for the deets on white sugar!

All Natural Exfoliator: White Sugar

Bringing new skin cells to the surface is a great way to have healthy feeling and looking skin.  How do you bring them to the surface?  Let's say it together: Exfoliation.  Keep a jar of it in your shower.  You can also add your favorite scented oils such as rose or lavender to create a rich body scrub.  Take a handful and gently massage your entire body with it, using a soft washcloth.  Rinse and the sugar crystals simply melt away down the drain.  So much better than eating it!

Bianca & Ramon Featured on Style Me Pretty!!

You may remember Bianca & Ramon from their e-session back in January.. Gorgeous girl, handsome groom, simply a fantastic couple to be featured.  Here's their story in Bianca's words:

Ramon and I have been together for over seven years and knew we wanted to celebrate our wedding in a special way with plenty of family and friends. When we stepped foot in Savannah ten months before our wedding day, we knew it was the place for us. The historic, southern charm of downtown and the warm hospitality were the driving factors for our choice. For our ceremony location, we chose the beautiful Ballroom on Broughton. It was a newly renovated loft space in the middle of downtown with beautiful chandeliers and oak hardwood floors. We had the honor of hosting its very first wedding. The ballroom felt very intimate but was large enough for our two hundred and fifty guests! Our ceremony floral arrangements were to die for ~ consisting of only white and beige flowers to maintain the regal look of the ballroom. The hanging orchids at the altar were whimsical and added just the right touch to the room.

Th Charles H. Morris Center was the ideal location for our reception. The exposed brick, along with the beautiful hardwood floors provided the perfect mix between a modern and historical feel. We wanted a place where our guests would feel completely at home to dance and enjoy the night.  Along with the beautiful interior of the Morris Center, the floral arrangements were a great contrast to the ceremony decor providing a bold blast of color. We wanted our guests to enter the reception and just fall in a sea of color. The dark burgundy and coral arrangements along with the candelabras kept with our regal theme. Our wedding was everything we hoped for and the vendors in Savannah, especially our plannerTricia Huddas and our team of photographers at Allison Reisz Photography, made our destination wedding a complete success!

Puffy Eyes?

Puffy eyes can be caused by many factors. These include fluid retention, stress, allergies, hormone changes, and other factors as well. When we cry, it is often accompanied by swollen eyes. This is due to the fact that are body reacts to emotions and causes more blood to flow through the eyes which leads to swelling. Also the production of too many emotional tears can strain the eyes. Also, we get puffy eyes after sleeping. This can be caused by different factors such as too much sodium in a diet causing water retention, tossing and turning and not getting enough sleep, excessive drinking of alcohol, and others as well.

For normal puffy eyes that are not caused by other eye conditions, there are many ways to get rid of puffy eyes. The following is a list of what to do for treating puffy eyes:
  • Wash face with ice cold water
  • Limit alcohol & sodium intake
  • Drink plenty of water to clean out your system
  • Place two slices of cool cucumber on the eyes for several minutes
  • Moisten two tea bags in cold water, chill them in the refrigerator and place them over closed eyelids for several minutes
  • Elevating your head when you sleep
  • Lighting pressing cold spoons over closed eyes
  • Applying crushed mint under the eyes
  • Using cold (from the fridge) fresh cut Aloe under the eyes. Slice the leaf in half and apply directly.
Notice the list doesn't include Preparation H... instead try these other more natural remedies.

DIY Cortisone Treatment for Acne

Have you ever had a huge mountain of a pimple on your face right before an important event?  I hear this a lot from my brides the week before their wedding.  It's underground, painful, & doesn't seem to be going anywhere!  "How do I get rid of this?!" is the question I often hear.  Well going to the Dermatologist can help almost instantly.  Cortisone injections can dramatically reduce inflammation and speed up healing.  With cystic acne lesions in particular, healing usually begins immediately.  But going to the Derm isn't always the easiest on the budget, especially when it's for a pimple. (Just keepin' it real.)  Also getting an injection doesn't sit well with everyone.  Cortisone shots can be very painful, worth it, but painful.  So what else can you do?

Here's an easy & effective home remedy for the next time this happens to you or someone you know.

Ingredients you'll need:

1. Clean washcloth
2. Hot water
3. 1% Hydrocortisone cream - I like Aveeno ($6 at any drug store)
What to do:

Take your washcloth and moisten it with water that's as hot as your skin can stand.  But please be smart & don't burn yourself.  Fold it up and apply it to the pimple.  As the outer folds of the washcloth start to cool, refold it so the warmer inside layers are exposed and reapply.  After 10 or 15 minutes when the washcloth has cooled off, run it under more hot water to get it hot again and repeat.   After you have done several cycles, add a lot of the hydrocortisone cream directly to the area & let it sit for 2 hours.

How to prevent:

Make sure to wash off  your makeup every night and cleanse your face every morning.
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Don't touch your face!!
Up your water intake.
Use an oil-free moisturizer daily.

Yesterday was more than just makeup...

Why do I love what I do so much?  Well not only do I get paid to be creative and play with makeup but I get to make a lot of people feel amazing.  Being able to give that feeling to someone is kind of addicting.  I had a client yesterday who after a couple of bad makeup trials was feeling very nervous.  She wanted to look natural yet stunning.  After chatting for a few minutes, I felt confident about her bridal beauty.  When I was finished, I spun her around back towards the mirror... and she cried happy tears immediately!  Her reaction was so genuine, I was instantly choked up.  She said she had been stressing out about this so much she felt an instant weight lifted and a sense of relief had come over her.  To be able to make someone feel so beautiful and confident was and always is an amazing experience.  Ladies and gentleman, this is why I do what I do.

DIY Hollywood Style Bubble Bath

1 raw egg
1/2 cup of shampoo
1 teaspoon of gelatine

Mix all ingredients together with an electric beater.  Add to the bath water when the tap is running.  Why gelatine you ask? Gelatin's high collagen protein content helps keep your skin smooth and firm. Many creams contain collagen to moisturize the skin but it is more effective when taken through food.  So eat some Jell-O after your bath!  Curious about the egg now?  Raw eggs contain natural proteins that greatly improve the appearance of tired skin.  The shampoo is just for bubbles!  Use your favorite but a moisturizing one will make your skin feel softer.

Have a nice relaxing Hollywood style bath with a nice glass of vino and a couple of cucumber slices over your eyes.  Make sure to let me know how it worked for you!  Until next time dolls...

Mascara Review

One perk of being a makeup artist is getting to try so many amazing products!  I have been sent quite a few mascaras recently and wanted to let you know which I loved.. and some, not so much.  I'm based out of Savannah, GA where the humidity is insane!  I have tested all the brands in the crazy heat for weeks and this is what I've come up with:

#1 Make Up For Ever- Smoky Lash
Out of the brands listed, this is my absolute favorite.  Why is it my fav?  This mascara is amazing with or without curling and primer.  I don't always have even time to do all the steps or the want... I know, I'm a bad makeup artist!  Love the full brush. It doesn't smear or run despite the record breaking humidity.  For $22, this mascara is worth every penny!

#2 MAC- Zoom Lash
I really like the mascara because it creates volume and you can easily build up the lashes.  I also love that it is smuge-proof.  For $14, this is a great buy!

#3 Smashbox- Hyperlash
This mascara comes in at #3 on my list because it is beautiful with curling & primer.  If you don't have the time or the want, this one won't give you the VaVa Voom you are most likely looking for.  But with the extra help, it is really nice.  It has more of comb applicator vs. a brush.  I tend to favor a full brush.  This is a good buy at $21.

#4 Naked Minerals Black Out Mascara
Now you all know I LOVE Naked Minerals Pressed Foundation but I do NOT love this mascara.  The reason is because smudges!  And smudges bad.  I tried it 3 days in a row.   I tried with & without primer to find the same result.  It is all natural, but for $15 it's on the bottom of my list.

I hope this helps you find a great match.  I also love Avon's Wash Off Waterproof & L'Oreal Double Extend in the gold package.  My top 3 are found at Sephora.com.

For primers: Try 1000 Lashes from Hard Candy or Layer from Smashbox.

Making Over the World - One Face at a Time! Part 2

Thank you to all of you who tuned in last night to see "Summer Makeup Tips".  I hope you enjoyed the tips & tricks featured on The Coastal Source!  Just in case you missed it, here's a link to the video:

http://www.thecoastalsource.com/news/local/story/Summer-Makeup-Tips-From-A-Local-Pro/JK22pScJXkK6PHnE9Gk4Kw.cspx

Wondering about the products I recommended?  Well here's a list to get you started:

Eyes:
Jewel toned waterproof eyeliners from Make Up For Ever
Eye shadow primer from Urban Decay
Avon’s Wash Off Waterproof Mascara

Lips:
Use a pinky brown lip pencil with sheer gloss rich in SPF
Heavy lipsticks in summer will dry out your lips & be too much.
Stick to light colors, shear gloss, and lip stains.

Bronzer:
When bronzing, pick a color that is no more than 2 shades darker than your skin tone. Also make sure it is matte. Shimmer bronzer on your face will make your makeup look muddy vs. clean and fresh.

Face:
Create your own tinted moisturizer by simply mixing foundation with an SPF-infused moisturizer and blending it in. Apply a face primer before to even out your skin’s texture and create a perfectly smooth canvas for your makeup
Face primers- oil absorbing Photo Finish Light from Smashbox
SPF- Block UVA & UVB rays
Cetaphil 50+
Peter Thomas Roth Uber Dry
Oil blotting sheets

Making Over the World - One Face at a Time!

I had the pleasure of going over to WJCL/Fox 28 studio yesterday to give a few summer makeup tips and provide Jennifer Beale with her first airbrush experience.  Truth be told, I was really nervous.  Makeup tips and makeovers don't make me nervous, wearing a mic and being in front of the camera for the first time made me nervous.  Jennifer and funny camera man, Nate, made me feel very comfortable and relaxed.

What a great way to share some of the tricks of the trade and helpful tips! I hope all of you enjoy the spot which will air tomorrow night at 10pm on Fox & again at 11pm on WJCL

Egg White Mask for Firmer Looking Skin

Beat one egg white in a bowl.  Spread a thin film on your face.  Rinse off after 10 to 20 minutes.  This mask tightens up the skin and flattens wrinkles.  Don't do this mask too often, your skin will eventually become resistant to the effect.  Perfect before a big event or photo shoot!

Aloe Vera: Magic Plant

Photobucket

I've always know how great and necessary aloe vera is after a day in the sun, but recently I learned how amazing it is for your face. Did you know this miracle plant is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory? This means aloe can actually heal your skin and help with acne. It also helps with:

* Dermatitis
* Psoriasis
* Dryness, Scaling and Flaking
* Eczema
* Chaffing and Chapping
* Sunburn
* Allergic reactions

Photobucket

Aloe Vera also helps with facial edema, which is swelling. Applying the natural gel of the aloe under your eyes can help with any puffiness. It helps improve overall circulation and blood and oxygen flow to the skin. Why is this important? This helps with synthesis and strength of your skin tissues. Simply put, your skin will look and feel better! Visit your local nursery or garden store and pick some up just in time for summer!

Tool Care: Cleaning your brushes

A common question I get is: How should I clean my makeup brushes? Before I tell you how, I'd like to tell you why you should clean them.

Not only does makeup build up make application difficult since you won't be able to get a true color if there's an old color already on there. The brushes are also filled with bacteria and germs. If they are your personal brushes, you still need to deep clean them once a week to avoid and skin problems. Skin breaking out but you haven't changed your skin care routine and there's no real reason it should be happening? Check your brushes.

Now how to clean: I like to use a few different products to deep clean. Brush cleaner, Clinique's Rinse Off Foaming Cleanser, and sometimes baby shampoo since it is really gentle. I like to add a small amount of cleaner to each brush and massage into a lather to work the old product out. Be easy with your brushes, you don't have to fray the hairs or destroy them. Rinse, lather, repeat as needed until the water runs clear.

After they are clean and you have squeezed the excess water out, allow proper time for the brushes to air dry completely. Normally this will be an overnight process. The key is to hang the brush over the edge of your counter so air can circulate all the around the hairs.

Hope this was helpful!

FormSpring Question:

I switched from using a daily moisturizer to vitamin E oil (which I love!) Now I need something to use daily with SPF protection. Any suggestions?

Answer from Jules:

So happy to hear you are loving the vitamin E oil! I love Wexler's Oil Free Hydrator SPF 30 (sold at Bath & Body Works) & Cetaphil's UVA/UVB Defense SPF 50 (sold at any drug store). Both won't clog your pores and aren't greasy. Both are between $6-$10.

Thanks for the question!

Makeup Swap

It's no secret that I love makeup! I buy so many different products to not only use in my pro kit but to also share reviews. Sometimes a product is great but won't really work in my kit or I've found something that works a little better. What do I do with all the makeup I don't use? I share with my friends! We do a makeup swap.

Have you ever purchased a great lip gloss but the wrong shade that you'll never use? Loved a gift with purchase bag but didn't really care for the products it came with? Instead of adding more clutter to your makeup bag or drawer, see if a friend can use it. Chances are she has a few items she'd love to trade too. This is a great way to organize and also clean out your makeup.

When I do a makeup bag overhaul for clients, the first step is to toss what is old and keep what you actually use. I know sometimes it's difficult to part with that eye shadow that was $20. Or the fancy name brand blush that you think one day you might use. Swapping is a great way to not lose but gain!

My best friends and I swap makeup, perfume, and even clothes. Everyone brings bags full of goodies and trade. It's a gulit-free shopping trip! Add some wine and you've got an instant girls night! Just give everything a quick once over w/ an anti-bac wipe and you're good to go!

Beauty Tips from our Facebook Fan page

Skin Care Tip: Apply your skin moisturizer after a bath or shower so that you can lock the moisture into your skin. Vitamin E oil is wonderful!

Eyebrow Tip: Your eyebrows should be about two shades lighter than your hair color, never darker. The opposite is true if your hair is blonde or gray.

Beauty Foods Tip: Sweet potatoes contain lots of vitamin A, which is a remarkable anti-aging and anti-wrinkling vitamin.

Is there any easier way to pluck brows?

Try tweezing your eyebrows right after a shower. The heat from the shower helps to loosen hair follicles, making plucking easier and less painful. You can also try Baby Anbesol to numb the area. Baby bc it won't burn your skin like the others. Just make sure not to get it in your eyes, that will burn like ...

Thanks for the question!

Rock out with your CROCS out!

It's no secret that I love Crocs! I have them in all colors & styles. Being a makeup artist, I'm on my feet all day. Plus having back issues, my body was hurting by the end of the day. Crocs got me through until I had back surgery last year.

Now with a titanium disk & even longer work days, I still depend on my Crocs to get my through those long days. Which brings me to the point of this entry: new styles!

I'm going to buy all 3 styles pictured. I'm sure my partner in beauty, @onysalon, will do the same! She's down w/ the C too!  Visit www.crocs.com for all the deets!  Images below from Crocs ad in People's Style Watch April 2010 issue:

The duct tape of beauty products - Aquaphor

Aquaphor has been dubbed the duct tape of beauty products. Works like a dream and is long lasting. A little goes a long way & it's noncomedogenic (it won't clog your pores)!  It does have a greasy feel just like Vaseline but it's amazing.  I'm pretty in love with all the Eucerin products, and this one is on top of my list.  Many famous makeup artists use Aquaphor in their kits to create a perfectly smooth lip.

If you have trouble with your lip gloss or lip stick not looking smooth due to lip lines or dry skin, this will take care of it.  Dry, cracked lips or skin are no match for the product.  If nothing else has worked, you must try Aquaphor.  You can pick this up and any drug store for around $6.

What is your beauty routine?

1. Ultra Bland cleanser from Lush
2. St. Ives Invigorating Apricot Scrub
3. Vitamin E stick all over

The Dangers of Loose Mineral Powders from Dr. Oz

Now I know most of you, myself included, have used or are using some sort of loose mineral powder makeup.  The most popular would be Bare Minerals.  I have made the switch personally and professionally to Naked Minerals, which is pressed mineral powder.  Better coverage, better for you, and no mess!  If you would like more information on Naked Minerals, email us: thesavvydolls@gmail.com

Check out what Dr. Oz had to say:

The Price of Beauty

"We’re paying more and more attention to the food and drink we put inside our bodies, but everyday we slather products on our bodies that are unregulated, made from hazardous substances, and potentially harmful to our health. In the pursuit of beauty (or, let’s face it, just covering up the circles under our eyes), we cake on makeup, rub on moisturizers, and spray on perfume – and not one of those products is subject to FDA approval. What’s worse, labels that seem to indicate healthy choices – natural, organic, hypoallergenic – don’t actually mean anything, because there are no regulations for using those terms. Here’s what you need to know about the 3 most dangerous beauty products.

The Problem with Powder is...

Mineral makeup is a big trend. Made from minerals such as mica, which are used for industrial purposes as well, these tiny particles are a thousand times smaller than predecessors from even 10 years ago. Their small size makes for a smoother, more flawless look, but it has one serious unintended consequence. The particles are so tiny they fall quickly through the air and can be inhaled easily into your lungs. When construction workers use mica in products such as spackle, they wear masks to protect their lungs from scarring over time. Though there are no studies showing damage from makeup use to date, experts say the long-term use and inhalation of minerals in makeup can lead to inflammation, irritation, and lung disease in women and girls."

I need to know the best eye makeup to buy.

For makeup newbies try: L'Oreal HIP & Hard Candy (both are at wal-mart $7-$10)

Some of the Pro lines I use include: MAC, Smashbox, Ben Nye, & MUFE.

Just make sure to use an eye shadow primer to prevent creasing & to make the color stay on longer.

What is the best way to apply mineral make-up? Kabuki brush?

I love to use a dual fiber brush. (it has white hairs that stick out) It gives great coverage but with a smooth finish. Then using a concealer brush, I go under the eye & where I need more. I love Eco Tools brush set by Alicia Sliverstone. Yes, from Clueless :)

I keep reading about stippling foundation. What does that even mean?

What a great question!

In the art world, stippling is a method of drawing or painting with a series of small dots to create texture and depth.

In the beauty world, stippling is a method of blending out creamy makeup products, like concealers, foundations, and lipsticks, to create a seamless, soft finish. To stipple, just apply the product a makeup sponge and use short strokes to lightly dab onto your face until blended.

What can I use to help the look of chapped lips? They feel soft but have tons of lines...

Use a moisturizing lipstick primer. Primers fill in fine lines, protect lips, smooth things out, and keep your color on longer. I'm a fan of Urban Decay's Lip Primer Potion ($20) & I also love their Eyeshadow Primer Potion to keep eyeshadow in place too!

Any good mascaras out there that don't cost over $20? I'm not feeling up to a mall run...

My favorite drug store mascara is L'Oreal Double Extend ($10) in the gold & white tube. The white side is a primer which can double as an eyelash conditioner. Conditioning your lashes will help them grow just like conditioning the hair on your head. Let me know how you like it!

Jennifer's Stunning E-Session

I had the absolute pleasure of working with this real life doll.  Despite our early AM appointment, Jennifer was so sweet & had the biggest smile.  She is a 4th grade teacher in Charlotte, NC and I'm sure her students love her too!  For her makeup, Jennifer didn't want to be overdone.  She wanted to just look like herself, just flawless.  Here are some of the elegant photos from her E-Session with the talented Allison Reisz!
