Thanks Jules for being THE BEST partner in beauty that I could have ever imagined. 2010 has a lot in store for us...I am excited to see where this journey leads us...straight to the top!

Saving the World- One FREE Click at a Time!

Beauty is not only skin deep, let's chat about inner beauty.  It starts with helping others.  Everyone always wants to help someone in need or donate to a charity.  But the amount that actually do help is pretty low.  If it were easy, would you do it?  Here's a chance to find out.  I've researched a few different ways you can give to awesome charities in a quick, easy... and free way!   With FreeRice, not only will you be a better person... you'll be smarter too!  Learn Spanish & feed refugees.  Amazing.  I even fed animals today for the Humane Society.  And let's not forget the baby seals! Oh the baby seals...
So NO excuses!  What a wonderful resolution to start & keep in 2010. "I give to charities"... add that to your life resume!
FreeRice is a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Program. Our partner is the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.  This effort has fed 27,000 refugees!

FreeRice has two goals:
  1. Provide education to everyone for free.
  2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
This is made possible by the generosity of the sponsors who advertise on the site. Somewhere in the world, a person will be eating rice that you helped provide.
More easy one-click free charities:
The Breast Cancer Site helps 6 different charities all by just clicking for free! The program funded 3,315 mammograms.  You can feed the hungry, help children, the rainforst, & help pet rescues.
All you have to do is search the internet using Good Search for the sponsors to donate to this charity. Since 2005, it has generated over $26,000 for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals!
Care2 is a huge site that helps you donate to many causes.  By visiting this site, your click will help stop violence against women.  The site's sponsors will give 100% of the donations to Amnesty International's Stop Violence Against Women campaign.  After that you can click here to help the Humane Society!  Once you have donated to one, one the left hand side of the screen you can pick many more to help.

Red pens away please

The question:  Can you end a sentence with a preposition?

Now that I'm blogging in a texting world, I wonder if the old rulebooks have been tossed out the window.  When is good grammar no longer needed?  Yes, sometimes you will sound silly and not so intelligent.  But where is the limit?  I personally hate the Boost Mobile tagline of "Where you at?", but it works for them.  In 3 words they are able to have many different meanings in one tagline.  They are not only selling the phone, but the new GPS feature, and targeting their demographic of 13-24 year olds.  I feel like Boost Mobile should say to me, "Don't hate."

I will admit, I don't use the proper punctuation rules all the time and I know I don't use the proper rules for most of what I write.  I simply write what I think, as it flows.  So please excuse my lack of rules.   But if I misspell something, let me know!  I did a little bit of Google research which I call "googling" on this issue and this is what I found:

If any of you have found yourself with similar thoughts, I hope this entry helps!  I guess it's all about personal preference.  As for me, I'm sure I'll continue to break the rules  : P

You with HOLLYWOOD HAIR!

Check out this feature Hollywood Makeover on Instyle Magazines website. It allows you to see how some of the Hollywood stars hairstyles would look on you. It is very simple to do...just upload a picture of you (for best results, make sure your hair is pulled back in the front). It then lets you make adjustments on your eyes, mouth and chin. You will see once you upload the photograph how easy it is...and it's alot of fun! You have probably seen sites like this before...but there was probably a fee...this feature on Instyle's website is FREE!

Girls Night!

I just got home from a wonderful night out with the girls!!! Sooo much fun!

Laughter is such great medicine...I know Jules and I laugh so much when we are together. I think we laugh more and more everytime we get together.

So what do I mean by all of this...what does this have to do with beauty? Great laughs...great drinks...and great girlfriends is good for you every now and then. Everyone needs time to rejuvanate...and laughter is a wonderful way to make that happen.

During this holiday season...in all of the hustle and bustle...take some time to do some things that make you laugh. And then...take the Joy of the season with you into the New Year!

*sings* I'll be home for Christmas.....

Alright Dolls, I've loaded you up with new posts before I head out to FL for Christmas.  Tiffony will take over on posting, because the blog must go on ;)

I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas!  Make sure to remember the real reason for the season & it ain't presents!  Enjoy your family, friends, pets.. all of it!  Sending much love out to you from my family to yours!

Cheers
-jules

ps- if a new pet is on your christmas list or someone you know, please remember to rescue!  all my animals are rescues & amazing.  you can even pick your breed.  check with your human society, animal control, craig's list under the pets catagory... they are so many ways to help.  keep it mind.  there are too many awesome animals who need good homes.  my house is pretty full, so i'm gonna need you guys to help me save them! xo.

3 Festive Makeup Looks!

On my FB fan page I was asked the question about holiday makeup ideas.  I know all of you are very different & like different looks so... here's 3 you can try!

Sugar & Spice:

And yes, everything nice! Use your brown tones, bronzers, & gold.  Use warm peach shimmer blush on your cheeks.  Go soft on the lips using a sheen & heavier on the eyes. Just don't over do it with the bronzer. A little goes a long way.

Party Purples:

Go for bold on with using color!  Once again, play up your eyes.  Use plums, even magentas for your shadow.  Skip the black & try using a navy liner to create more of depth. Use a soft pink for blush, and pair with a sheer glossy lip. If the color is more than enough for, don't go under your eye with the shadow.  Or go with a sheer grape color & blend blend blend!

Rockin' Rose:

For this look use a very light wash of beige shadow or a light frost.  Your lips will do the talking!  Make sure your foundation is flawless.  Use a soft pink tone for your cheeks.  Most importantly, line your lips with a pencil one shade darker than your lipstick. A touch, a tad, darker. To step this look up, use liquid eyeliner to create a cat eye.

There you go ladies!  Spread some holiday cheer!

The BEST Pore Minimizer- Survey Says:

Murad's T-Zone Pore Refining Gel- $40
Find it at Sephora

What it is:
A treatment step that perfects the skin by balancing oily and dry zones for a beautifully radiant complexion.

What it is formulated to do:
Murad T-Zone Pore Refining Gel balances and refines skin by removing pore-clogging impurities and gently exfoliating to remove dull, dry skin cells.

What else you need to know:
This gel is formulated specifically to target T-Zone oiliness.

New Mask... Any Ideas?

I'm working on making a new mask using old ingredients. Oatmeal, aspirin, & honey...

Not sure how to make this mask better & different than what I normally do...

Things that make you go hmm.....

Kim Kardashian talks about makeup & more!

Oh how I love Kim Kardashian's beauty.  Everytime I see her, I am instantly inspired to do my own makeup.  And after doing everyone else's makeup all the time, that's kind of a big deal for me!  In this months Glamour magazine, Kim talks beauty and shares her favorite beauty tip:

“My makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, taught me that after you put on concealer, set it with powder on top.  It lasts longer.”

Healthy Ideas for the Holidays

Did you know that walking a mile burns the same amount of calories as running a mile? Also, walking has the highest rate of compliance of any exercise, which means you're more likely to stick to it than anything else.

Jumping rope is an incredibly effective cardiovascular exercise, which also works the shoulders, arms, core and legs. Jumping rope doesn't require a lot of space & ropes are fairly inexpensive and can be easily taken anywhere for a great workout on the fly. Best of all, you can burn between 150 to 200 calories in just 15 minutes!

Go NUTS!  Before that big holiday party, pop a handful of nuts. Before you leave home, eat some raw organic nuts. They contain the right amount of protein and fat, which release the hormone leptin in the stomach that in turn suppresses the hunger hormone “ghrelin” and brings about satiety for healthier partying!

Not all nuts are created equal! So here's some help:

1. Walnuts reign supreme! They're a great source of heart-healthy Omega 3s and are loaded with the antioxidant ellagic acid, which is known for its immune-boosting capabilities as well as cancer-fighting properties.
2. Almonds rank next with an amazing amount of magnesium, potassium, manganese, copper, Vitamin E, selenium and calcium.
Almonds are also effective in lowering cholesterol with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
3. Pecans are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins A, B and E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium and zinc.
4. Cashews round out the top four choices because they are lower in fat than most nuts and are rich in copper, magnesium, zinc, iron and biotin.

Love chips & dip? Try to switch the chips for vegetable sticks & guacamole!  Celery, carrots, bell peppers & tomatoes!

Healthy Guacamole Recipe:
- 2 Organic Hass avocados
- 1 organic vine ripe tomato
- 1/2 minced organic onion
- 2 tbsp of lime or lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp of Himalayan sea salt
- a pinch or black pepper
Mix all ingredients together, and enjoy!
Have a happy & healthy holiday season everyone!
a tip for tuesday: smokey/smoky- is a makeup technique, not only a color. it doesn't have to be black or even dark. just blended & sultry!

Julie & Julia...more than a movie.

This may seem like a movie review from the title of this entry.. but it's not.  Tonight my fiance & I watched this movie while enjoying leftovers from yesterday's Christmas party.  A pretty great night in my book I must say.  While I was expecting a sweet romantic comedy to entertain me... I also walked away with a heart full of encouragement to boot!

For those who have no idea what this movie is about, here's a quick catch up:  Julie Powell writes a blog based on cooking her way through Julia Child's cookbook over the course of a year.  Since recently starting a blog, this plot immediately captured my attention.  They both found a way to do what they loved.  Julia, wasn't always the Julia Child we all know.  She was once a woman with a good idea of turning something she loved into something bigger than herself.  Julie, found her spirit of writing through the guidance of cooking "with Julia".  I found myself emotional often, tearing up with happy tears of hope.  These women, both real life women, made a big dream an even bigger reality.

My passion is makeup.  It's pretty simple.  I love being able to transform someone who hasn't felt good about themself into a confident person who has a new found excited about the showing off their new look.  I love being able to create works of art on a real life canvas.  I love being able to do something well.

It's more than pretty colors that make my heart race... well sometimes it's about that too!  But it's more about meaning something valuable to someone.  I have been blessed to be able to make women feel beautiful, sometimes more beautiful than they've ever felt before.  And when I'm lucky enough, I can even help bring out so much beauty.. they can't stop looking at themselves in the mirror.  That is truly the best!

Back in 1997 when I graduated high school, I started my "professional makeup career" at the Clinique counter at the local Belk dept store.  I was so proud to wear my pristine white lab coat.  I was floored to actually get paid to do makeup!  Now over 12 years later, here I am... wondering... how far can I go?  How big can I dream?

Julia wrote a cookbook that changed the culinary world & became more than a household name.  Julie Powell created her blog, which became a book, which was turned into the movie which sparked this blog entry.  Stay tuned... with the help of God, all of you who support me, & hard work... there will be much more to come!

Cheers to dreaming big!

Dark circles no more!

Getting rid of dark circles might be the number one question I get from clients, friends, everyone really.  Here are a few tricks to help you look rested & refreshed.

Something you need to know about your under eye area, is that it is VERY delicate.  Why?  The skin around the eye is the thinnest, most delicate skin of your entire body.  The capillaries are also much closer to the surface & easily broken.  Broken capillaries + translucent skin = dark circles.

Tip: When doing anything in your eye area, use your ring finger.  It is the weakest digit & will cause the least amount of pressure.  No kidding!  I'll give you a minute to test it out....... crazy, right?!

Also rubbing, tugging, or touching that area can cause the shinners!  So use creme or liquid liners vs. pencils & try not to touch your face or eyes at all.

Product recommendation: Nivea Q10 for Men (works for all) $8.48
I can never find it in stores, so I order it from here: America's Rx
The best eye cream for dark circles!

Makeup tipApply concealer with a brush to undereyes, blend with a damp sponge and set with translucent powder using the same damp sponge. Brush away that excess powder and voila - you've got flawless, creaseless undereyes! Lift concealer from Make Up Forever is pretty awesome & found at Sephora.

There you go dolls!  Look refreshed & vibrant in 2010!
Instant human, just add coffee. Repeat until you have reached desired effect.

Happy Birthday to my partner in beauty & one of my best friends, Tiffony! Cheers to you @onysalon, I'm so happy you were born today!

Celebrating Glamour!

Today is a wonderful day to appreciate all of the good things that have happened in your life!  December 9th is a day that has always been a day for me to celebrate life...my life...that's right today is my birthday!  This year has brought so many great people and great opportunities into my life.  Just to have the opportunity to share from my heart about all that the beauty industry has to offer is simply a blessing.

One of my greatest joys is seeing the face of all of the ladies that Jules and I are able to bring the gift of glamour.  It is soooo much fun to see the tears of joy (that they dab very lightly before they stream down their new fabulous makeup :)).  We have had some to even say..."I have never felt this pretty in my life!"  It makes our hearts skip a beat to hear that!

On this day, I want to express my appreciation to you...our fans and biggest supporters.  It is because of you that I have the great privilege to do what I love.  Although somedays is can be a bit stressful...at the end of the day it is ALL worth it.  To be able to have a response like the one I spoke of,  makes it all worth while.    If you have a special lady in your life who needs a little pampering, why not give her the gift of glamour this holiday season.  Click on the picure below to find out how.

Thanks for letting us bring you the gift of glamour!

Color Outside the Lines!

Makeup is NOT a tattoo, it washes off.  Unlike that barbwire armband that Pamela Anderson thought was a good idea back in the 90's.  I meet so many clients who admit they are afraid of color.  Or they "don't know what that brush is for, so I don't use it."  I say, use everything!  Your face is a clean canvas that you can create art on daily.

That is how I got my start with makeup.  My mom & I would have Saturday date nights.  We would listen to old records from the 50's, eat peanut M&M's, & play with all the colors from her makeup drawer.  I was encouraged to put the bright blue on my cheeks and try something different because I could always wash it off if I didn't like it.  I learned quickly my face was a coloring book & I made the most of my steady hand.  This is how I learned to apply liquid liner before I was double digits.  With lots of trial & error, and not to mention makeup remover.  One day, after I was allowed to wear makeup, I took my look outside.  I've been smitten ever since.

I challenge all of you to pick the "wild" colors & "strange" brushes to create a look.  You will be surprised at what you will be able to create.

I hope I have encouraged you to step outside of the box & play with colors.  Please send me pictures of your art & comments on your experience.

Cheers to you!

Fan choice blog entry! YOU tell me what YOU want to know about on www.beasavvydoll.blogspot.com

Rave Review!

When Jules and I read the following email from one of our most recent brides, we just had to share it!  Our goal as the glam squad is to not only help our brides look and feel their personal best on their wedding day, but we love to create a fun atmosphere.  We are so grateful that our clients allow us to be ourselves.

Ladies,
I just wanted to send a quick email to say thank you. Everyone loved you guys and thought you were an amazing team, even Matt was talking about y'all! Everyone looked beautiful and hair and makeup lasted throughout the night. Sara even slept in her makeup and it still looked great the next day!! As far as mine, I know that y'all have never seen me dressed up in cop gear, but as you can imagine it takes away a bit of your femininity. I wear green polyester pants and a tan polyester shirt with a bunch of shiny pins on it. I wear 30lbs of duty gear including boots and a bullet proof vest. I do wear a little makeup, but it usually wears off because of the long shifts and my hair is in a bun. To say I felt like a princess is an understatement. I looked and felt gorgeous and can't thank you enough. You not only made my day special, you brought the 'wedding experience' to a whole different level. You ladies know how to make getting ready fun and keep the atmosphere light. I know I wasn't nervous to marry the man of my dreams (just nervous about falling!) but my bridesmaids and mom were nervous. You all made them forget the nerves and truly enjoy themselves. We all said it felt like we had known you for years! I just can't tell you how grateful I am, you truly are amazing ladies that are amazing at what you do!
Sincerely,
Katie

Finally home after yet another makeup filled day! Looking fwd to relaxing & maybe putting up the Christmas tree!

From the Hairstylist Heart: True Beauty

Do you know a beautiful person who's hiding behind their hair?

Chances are, you problably do!  As a cosmetologist with clients of all races and ethinic backgrounds, I can safely say that many of my clients are hiding or have hid behind their hair.  I love when I meet a client for the first time and they say I don't want my hair as short as yours.  I think it's funny!  But at the same time, I completely understand what it feels like to have someone disregard what you say and just start cutting.  In the past, I have had my hair cut much shorter than I meant it to be.  So I understand!  With that being said, I believe most clients simply have a fear of being misunderstood.  Clients want a stylist to listen to what they want!  Another concern that a few of my clients have is the fact that their husband or significant other may love their long hair.  I am never suggest that a client make waves at home, however, maybe a compromise can be made.  Funny thing is sometimes when I have a client who's significant did not want her to cut her hair...LOVE it once they see it.

However, sometimes in life it's time for a change.  If you know someone who has had the same look for ages, then it is probably time for an upgraded look.  Whether short or long, sometimes little details can be where the change should begin.  Maybe the change is adding a side swoop bang or a full wispy bang.  Maybe it's adding layers to long beautiful locks.  Whatever the change is for you!  That is the key the change needs to be something that fits YOU!  Everyone is different...we all have different hair issues as well as time constraints that make us choose hairstyles that work for us.

Now, don't get me wrong, I know that a ponytail is the quickest, easiest, and most classic do EVER!  But if that is a daily look for you...then it maybe time for a change.  Whenever I have a client who lives in a ponytail and wants to change her hair, I usually suggest a haircut that will not allow them to put their hair in a pony tail at all.  If it's not an option, then she will not be tempted.  Short hair is not for everybody!  So talk with your stylist to see what changes can be made that will work with your face shape, chosen career, and most importantly your personal style.

Make sure whatever you and your stylist decide on is something that you will be able to style everyday.  It's wonderful to leave the salon with a new amazing haircut, but it is stressful the next morning when it's your turn to style it.  Be sure to have the necessary products at home to maintain your new style.  Your stylist will most likely make product suggestions to you.  However, if you are like a lot of people, you may have some products at home that maybe similar to the ones suggested.  Ask your stylist if a product that you have at home can give you similar results.  Buy product if you absolutely love how it works in your hair!  Ask lots of questions.  Ask your stylist when you should use the product, and how much product to use.  You want to make sure you get the same results, so you need to make sure you understand the steps in the process.

Now that you have your new improved hairstyle, vow to never let your hair become your security blanket.  Hair does not make you or break you.  Most of my clients find their real beauty once we have pulled back the thing that they have been hiding behind, their hair.

An interesting thought to leave you with!  Is your hair hiding your true beauty?

Giving Thanks!

On the eve of this Thanksgiving, Jules and I would like to say how thankful we are for all of the people in our lives who push us to be the best!  We would not be where we are without each one of you.  You make us strive harder and harder each day to produce the amazing final results that you see here on the blog.  Thank you to all of the beautiful brides who have let us be apart of the memories of your wedding day.  We do not take it for granted and see it as an honor to be received as family by the time our work is completed.

Please take time to show gratitude to all of the important people in your life.

Thanks again....and...Happy Thanksgiving from the Pros who Know!

Sincerely,
Tiffony and Jules

MOROCCANOIL TREATMENT is a product that I love and use all of the time.  I call it liquid gold in a bottle!  I can't keep enough of this product in stock.  It is an ultra-light formula which is absorbed by the hair instantly resulting in a natural, silky finish and brillant shine without leaving a residue.  Moroccanoil is great for all hair types, controls frizz, takes 40% off your drying time, it's a heat protectant, and it smells awesome!  Just remember, a little goes along way.  After shampooing and conditioning, start with the size of a a nickel or quarter, depending on your hair texture and the amount of hair you have.  Distribute the product through your hands, then through the hair as evenly as you can, and comb through.  Then use your normal styling products and dry.  Once the hair is dry, I like to add a few drops for added shine and to calm down any frizz.  This is really awesome stuff.  For more information, check out http://www.moroccanoil.com/ .

A sneak peek from the photo shoot we did on Sunday with Michael Troop & his amazing wife Tatiana von Tauber.  The model is Emily Huey, who was a joy to work with!

Trailer for "Requiem for Herstory"

Tiffony & I worked on this film over the summer!  It is an Indie short which we hope will become a feature!  The entire crew became family to us & it was a truly amazing experience.  We even learned a new language called "Kathorean"!  More to come!

Short Summary: A story of a young girl who experiences a strange metamorphosis under the pressure of her parent's ambition.

In real life, Leighton Meester, the girl behind the Gossip Girl, favors scarlet lip gloss, too.

Her fave?

"L'Oreal Infallible Plumping Lipgloss in Plumped Red gives me that extra little color and boost when I really want my lips to pop," Meester tells Usmagazine.com.

You heard it here first!

Welcome all beauty lovers to "Be a Savvy Doll"!

We decided to create a home for all of our beauty posts on hair & makeup as well as fashion.  Please feel free to add comments & reviews of all things beauty.  We named our blog for you, "the Savvy Doll" & also since we are based out of Savannah, GA, we are "Savvy Dolls" ourselves!  You can see our websites by visiting: www.dollfacebyjules.com & www.onysalon.com

Tiffony & I have been working together as the "Dream Team" or the "Glam Squad" to create picture perfect brides as well as edgy, high fashion, editorial, works of art.  We try our very best to make all of our clients feel comfortable working with us.  We strive to be extremely professional, yet funny & sometimes goofy.  Well, I'm usually the goofy one.  We don't take ourselves too seriously & try to enjoy every moment we spend living our dreams.  Our goal is to make your experience with us the most memorable & enjoyable possible!

We are looking forward to sharing all we know about the beauty industry.  Tricks of the trade shall be secrets no more!  Thank you in advance for your support.  Stay tuned...

Love,
Jules & Tiffony
